Can Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy Transform the Current Model of Mental Health Treatment?

Ketamine is a dissociative, anesthetic medication, and when used in low doses can create a short-lived, safe psychedelic experience. Combined with cognitive therapy, Ketamine has been used for years to manage various mental health conditions such as treatment resistant depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and more recently, relief from anxiety surrounding the diagnosis of a life-threatening illness, and end-of-life distress. Patients with chronic pain, drug and alcohol addictions, and even eating disorders have also shown promising outcomes with Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP). With more than one in five Americans living with mental health conditions, the demand for new treatments has grown, but much of the focus still remains on talk therapy and daily psychiatric medications for patients as a first option. This can prove problematic as over 50 percent of people do not respond to the first medication they try, and many have unwanted side effects. Often, these medications are taken for decades or lifetimes and rarely reach or relieve the underlying cause(s) of the symptoms.

In contrast, psychedelic-assisted therapy with Ketamine can produce a profound, subjective experience with long-term positive changes in mood, motivation, insight, cognition, and behavior. Numerous studies have shown the promising benefits of Ketamine in relieving depression and anxiety. Many patients report improvements in their symptoms within hours to days after treatment, and breakthroughs in areas they previously felt blocked or emotionally stuck, often stating that several sessions of Ketamine accomplished more than years of therapy. Ketamine impacts specific areas of the brain such as the default mode network (DMN), the part of the brain that keeps one on guard while holding tight to old patterns of thinking. Ketamine can open up new and different perspectives regarding the past. This medicine opens a world of healing possibilities.
